World Oceans Day and Sustainability Celebrated

June 6, 2014

World Oceans Day is celebrated around the world every June 8th. In 2008 the United Nations General Assembly recognized this day to solidify the importance of conservation of the worlds ocean, and in turn sustainability.

The oceans make up 71% of the Earth’s surface and contain 95% of the planet’s water source. It is critical that we are conscious of our impact on the environment and our sustainability practices that influence the world’s largest water source.

At GLBC, we pride ourselves on our sustainability practices. We were not only the first independent sheet plant in BC to achieve the Sustainable Forestry Initiative certification but we are constantly on the leading edge of environmental responsibility.

Relevant to World Oceans Day, GLBC focuses on the importance of standard chemical ink products. At GLBC we use only water based non-toxic inks and ensures all waste is recycled. This is important as the chemicals in ink cause an enormous impact on our environment.

You can read more about our sustainability practices here.

We are also conscious to use water based tools whenever possible particularly in our printing processes. In our Flexographic Printing, we use fast drying water based inks, to enhance our efficiency. This not only directly impacts the amount of chemicals we use, but also affects the speed at which we are able to complete projects and minimizes the amount of electrical energy we consume.

Our Litho-Laminating utilizes a water based adhesive to glue the printed design to the corrugated board. This environmentally conscious option, creates a minimized impact on the chemicals we use.

In celebration of World Ocean Day, we tip our box hat to all the sustainable practices available helping us to be conscious of our environmental impact while still creating a great product. Happy World Oceans Day!
