Behind the Packaging: An Interview with Jim Davison – Prepress

As we continue to show our appreciation of our design professionals for National Packaging Design Day (May 7th), we interviewed valued members of our prepress and structural design team to learn more about their profession and why they love all things packaging!

We will be speaking to Jim Davison who is our Prepress Supervisor at our Twigg Location. Jim oversees the printing jobs at Great Little Box Company (GLBC) and ensures that the graphic designs and content meet all quality and technical standards before being sent out to print. Jim has been with us for 5 years and is very knowledgeable in the industry.

Why did you choose a career in prepress?

I graduated high school in London and from there, everyone wanted a career in trades whereas I was interested in the print industry. It was a great choice to get into as it was well-paid, unionized, and I got the opportunity to be creative. My uncle lined up an apprenticeship for me and the rest is history!

What was your most satisfying prepress success and why?

I was involved with onboarding a new computer system in my previous job. For two years, I helped pioneer the use of a digital system for prepress which was a great accomplishment.

From a graphics standpoint – what catches your eye that makes a product pop from the shelves?

What attracts my eye is simplicity. When I was in graphic design, I remember being told to look at negative space which is part of the yin-yang that makes up the balance of design. For me, white space can be more telling than the graphics.

What brands or design products do you admire the most?

Guinness – for 262 Years, they have found ways to maintain the brand’s image with the simplicity of the colours – gold, black and white.

How do you approach a new project?

When I receive a new project, I ensure that it’s all hands on deck! Collaboration is key and it’s best to have as many eyes on it as possible. We have TPT (Technical Planning Team) Meetings where we discuss projects with our production, design, sales, and estimating teams. This helps everyone be on the same page so that there are no surprises when a product is manufactured and printed.

What do you like most about your job?

The creative process has always been attractive to me so to receive a graphic design and to make it work on the press is a great feeling. Receiving feedback that the customer’s expectations have been met and are happy with the outcome – doesn’t get any better than that!

What advice would you give yourself 5 years ago regarding your job?

Same advice back then – Out of commercial and get into packaging! The packaging industry is innovative and is always growing.

What is the most fun part of your job?

I enjoy collaborating with our people! We joke, share our good and bad days and at the end of the day, we rally together as a team. I am surrounded by the most talented group of experts at GLBC.

Why do you love working at GLBC?

I love how it’s not just a job for me. I truly enjoy what I do!

I’m truly proud of the progress prepress has made since I first started. Love to see how everyone has grown to know what it is and building on the processes.

The relationships that I’ve gained at GLBC are amazing. We truly are a big family and I love working with my colleagues.

GLBC boosts company culture to a new level: Box Goals, trips, town hall meetings, profit share, etc!
