Beyond the Sales – Justin Tunstall, Packaging Specialist

Why did you choose a career in sales?

I enjoy meeting and interacting with people and engaging with different personalities and I am very competitive. Having played competitive sports growing up, I realized early on that the feeling you get when you win in a game is the same as the feeling you get when you make a sale. SportChek was a great start for me and was my first real job in high school. I was able to sell the sports equipment I was always using! It was a great experience, I learned a lot and from there I was assured I wanted a career in sales.

What are some keys to your success as a salesperson in the packaging industry?

Building strong relationships with lots of communication. Being open, honest, transparent, and responsive.

I do my best to immerse myself in my clients’ businesses and essentially become a part of their teams!

What interests you most about being in the Corrugated division?

Getting to see all the great things our clients are manufacturing and working with them to ensure their product arrives safely (and fashionably) from point A to point B. It always feels awesome seeing their product in stores and knowing we were part of it getting there!

What do you find most rewarding about being in sales?

Overcoming an obstacle by finding a solution. We always want things to go as smoothly as possible and do our best to make sure that happens, but things always can come up out of nowhere. The feeling you get when we’ve risen above the obstacle and made our client happy is truly rewarding. As the great Mike Tyson says, “Everyone has a plan until you get punched in the face!”

In sales, what tends to be your biggest challenge and how do you overcome this?

Sales (and life for that matter) is a roller coaster ride of emotions with some great highs and some low lows. I do my best to never get too high on the highs or too low on the lows. Each day I try to get out in nature and completely unplug for at least half an hour to breathe and reflect.

What advice would you give yourself 5 years ago regarding sales?

Embrace rejection and remember that failure is just a learning step in your life’s journey. If you do the right things the right things will happen!

What is your favourite memory at GLBC/Ideon Packaging?

There are so many great memories.

Monthly in-person town halls have always been a blast! One of those town halls that really stands out is a Summer BBQ at Dyke Rd. We had Vera’s Burger Truck roll in to feed us, followed by a full carnival with all sorts of games and also a dunk tank. By donation we had the opportunity to take a shot at dunking our leaders; Rick, Dan and Matt. I think we blew the roof off the money goal we were trying to raise for our 4theKids fund. Needless to say, the kids were extremely happy that year and Rick, Dan and Matt were very soaked that day!
